Alex Romero

image1Our June Athlete of the Month for Ole Glory is Mr. Alex Romero. Alex first learned about Ole Glory CrossFit when he started working at PHP. His coworkers, which are also members at OG, Daina Lanclos, Anthony Rogers and Keith Stringer, peer pressured him into signing up for On Ramp classes in September 2017. He hasn’t looked back since. “My first real WOD was at the end of On Ramp and it consisted of rowing, burpees and air squats. I gave it my all and I thought my lungs were going to explode, but that’s a feeling I’ve come to love because that means you’re doing it right!”

Alex has come a long way since joining our OG family. Originally he was unable to do 10 push-ups without stopping and just recently he completed 14 rounds of Cindy (20 minutes of 5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups and 15 squats)!! Awesome job!

New challenges are always exciting for Alex. “I want to improve my body weight movements and learn to be competent in all movements of CrossFit. My next big challenge is to learn double unders and then move on to muscle ups.”IMG_2326

When you have the drive and determination to push yourself to perform at your best, then you eventually will see a positive change in your body. “Throughout the last year I have seen my body come into shape like I’ve never seen. I came into CrossFit just looking to lose weight. I was tired of being the chubby kid that I had been for most of my life. CrossFit has done that, but has also started a fire inside of me to maintain a generally healthy lifestyle and to reach for goals that I never thought were possible. Along with my new body has come a new source of self confidence that I am thankful for everyday.”

Alex’s athletic background includes two years of wrestling for Comeaux High School. “Our team was one of the more successful ones in Lafayette so our practices were tough, but no where near as tough as some of the things I’ve done at OG.” Alex has found a passion for Olympic weightlifting with the snatch being his favorite lift. “I’ve always respected Olympic lifting for the finesse and incredible strength it takes. I love being able to throw and control that much weight overhead.”IMG_2330

As far as workouts are concerned, his favorite WOD to date is the partner workout for Spring Fling with his teammate, Anthony Rogers (1,000 meter row each, 80 pull-ups/OH hold and 60 push press/pull-up bar hang). “It was one of the most gruesome workouts I’ve ever done, but I was impressed by our performance.” Of course every athlete has those movements they despise, which for Alex is wallballs!

In Alex’s non-CrossFit life he is 23 years young and “very single”! Although he doesn’t have any children yet, he is looking forward to having a family of his own one day. He is currently employed as an aircraft parts technician. When he’s not working you can find him hanging out with friends and his two pups. “I am always doing some form of home improvement or DIY project on my house, so I’d like to think of that as my hobby.”

When we asked Alex what he loved about OG, this is what he had to say, “I love OG because every time I walk in there are familiar faces to greet me, and every workout can be tailored to fit my skill set. I’ve never been shamed about not being able to do something but I have received countless words of encouragement throughout my time at OG that have pushed me to become the best athlete I have ever been.”

image2His favorite quote is one that was repeated to him almost daily throughout his childhood by his dad, “Always do the right thing ESPECIALLY when no one is looking”. He makes sure to apply this to CF by not shorting his reps in a workout. “I could easily shave some time off of my WODs, but I would be cheating no one but myself.” He also applies it to his everyday life and states that it has helped him to become the person he is today. 

Alex also had some advice for anyone who is interested in giving CrossFit a shot. “If I could give any advice to someone who wants to start or has just started: 2 things, just show up and give it time! IT WON’T HAPPEN OVERNIGHT! Slowly things will change and you will get stronger, and you will get faster and you will get better. Before long you’ll be doing things you never thought you could do.”
